Preface
Annual Review of Pharmacology
Editors' lives are often thought to be overwhelmed by mountains of manuscripts and reams of galley proofs and governed by deadlines which must be met by authors, printers, and editors alike. While this sometimes seems true (any job has some built-in drudgery), there are compensations as well.
For instance, it's rewarding when a man who originally advised against starting an annual review of pharmacology tells you he was so wrong that the book has top priority on his reading list. He must have meant what he said because he also contributed a review. It is also gratifying that a high percentage of those invited to write reviews do so, and indicate in their letters of acceptance that Annual Review of Pharmacology is truly a useful and respected publication.
The Editors take special delight in the devotion of the Editorial Committee. This group of eminent pharmacologists finds time during the year to prepare lists of potential contributors so that the yearly editorial meeting is virtually a roll call of pharmacological researchers. We see each member's term come to an end with genuine regret which fortunately is balanced by the pleasure of welcoming the new members. This process assures the continuing vitality of the Committee and permits the Editors to view pharmacology through the eyes of the men who are developing the science.
A list of compensations would not be complete without mentioning the pleasure in working with our Assistant Editor, Mrs. Greta Olle, our indexer, Mrs. Dorothy Read, and our printers, the George Banta Company.
